James Robinson takes the horror-fest of Geoff Johns' Blackest Night to the cornfields of Smallville in Blackest Night: Superman a three-issue miniseries, narrowing the focus of the event while at the same time playing up the story's slasher-film sensibilities. Like its fellow tie-in, Blackest Night: Batman, the result is a lot of fun, and a further reminder that the ingenuity of these ancillary tie-in series might rest in their simplicity. With the dead rising from their graves left and right, DC has gambled on the premise that the sight of each major hero of the DCU interacting with resurrected, possessed loved ones will carry with it enough dramatic weight to support its own story. It paid off, apparently. Stylish, too.
